Redefining Leadership Through Purpose, People and Progress
In today’s business environment, leadership is measured by more than titles, financial performance or professional milestones. For Pavani Perera, Founder of MyTaxBuddy and Director of Finance & Administration at Udeshi City (Pvt) Limited, meaningful leadership is defined by the people and communities that become stronger through one’s influence.
With experience spanning finance, administration, taxation, entrepreneurship and community service, Pavani’s leadership philosophy is rooted in a simple belief: business success becomes more meaningful when it creates value beyond the organisation itself. Her journey reflects a balance between commercial responsibility and empathy, innovation and experience, and ambition and civic responsibility. “Leadership is not about how many people work under you, but how many people and communities become stronger because you chose to serve, support and invest in them,” she explains.
For Pavani, impactful leadership begins with understanding people and recognising their potential. While achievements demonstrate capability, she believes the true measure of leadership lies in the difference one makes in the lives of others. Encouraging confidence, changing perspectives or creating opportunities can create a lasting impact that may never appear on a financial statement.
This people-centred philosophy has influenced her role within the family business. One of the defining challenges of her leadership journey has been establishing her own identity while protecting the legacy created by her father, the first generation behind Udeshi City. Taking a family business forward requires respecting the sacrifices and decisions that created its foundation while preparing the organisation for a changing environment. For Pavani, this has involved navigating generational differences in strategic decision-making.
The first generation may rely on practical experience and established methods, while the next generation may bring technology, new perspectives and data-driven thinking. Rather than viewing these approaches as competing philosophies, Pavani believes the strongest path lies in combining them.
Her experience has taught her that transformation does not always require dramatic disruption. Listening, understanding existing systems and introducing improvements consistently can strengthen an organisation without undermining its foundations. This has developed her resilience and patience while reinforcing the importance of listening before influencing change.
This philosophy became particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when businesses across Sri Lanka faced unprecedented financial pressure. Udeshi City was also affected, while many tenants struggled to keep their businesses operational. In response, the company provided rental concessions despite the financial impact on the organisation. From a purely commercial perspective, it was not the easiest decision. Yet Pavani viewed the situation through a wider lens. Behind every tenant was a business, a livelihood and, in many cases, a family depending on that income. Supporting them during an extraordinary period represented responsible leadership.
“Profit is essential for sustainability, but meaningful leadership also considers the people behind every decision,” she says. Her understanding of impact extends beyond business through her involvement in Lionism and community initiatives. From helping an elderly person regain clear vision through spectacles to supporting a young girl’s education, Pavani has witnessed how simple interventions can transform lives. Larger community projects have reinforced the same lesson: initiatives that continue benefiting people long after completion can create a legacy that financial returns alone cannot measure.
That philosophy of service has also shaped her entrepreneurial journey with MyTaxBuddy. Taxation is often perceived as complicated and intimidating. Pavani understands this perception personally, having once felt the same uncertainty herself. Her curiosity led her to study taxation and qualify as a tax adviser. Although she continued working within the family business, friends and relatives increasingly approached her for tax-related guidance.
What began as informal advice revealed a wider need. People from different professions and backgrounds often lacked confidence in understanding their tax responsibilities, with some delaying their obligations simply because they were uncertain about what they needed to do.
Pavani recognised an opportunity to transform her knowledge and informal support into a structured service. MyTaxBuddy was developed with the goal of making taxation more accessible, understandable and approachable. The response reinforced the importance of communication in financial services. When complex tax concepts were explained in everyday language, people became less anxious and more willing to engage with their responsibilities. For Pavani, the objective was not simply to help clients complete tax returns, but to create an environment where they could ask questions without feeling intimidated or judged.
“My aim is to replace fear with understanding and give individuals a safe space to ask questions without feeling judged,” she says.
Looking ahead, MyTaxBuddy is positioned to address an increasingly complex personal taxation landscape. Income structures are changing, with individuals earning through salaries, investments, property, freelance work, digital platforms and overseas sources. As these income streams become more diverse, personal taxation requires a more proactive approach.
Pavani believes individuals should move beyond viewing taxation as a once-a-year obligation. Instead, taxpayers should have access to continuous guidance that helps them understand their responsibilities, maintain appropriate records, prepare for deadlines and make informed financial decisions throughout the year.
Technology will play an important role in this evolution. Pavani envisions interactive digital tools and, eventually, a dedicated MyTaxBuddy application that can bring tax guidance closer to individuals. She also sees potential for tax-informed personal financial planning, recognising the close relationship between taxation and broader financial decisions.
Ultimately, Pavani’s professional journey reflects a broader understanding of modern leadership. Whether managing a family business, supporting clients through taxation challenges, responding to crises or contributing to community initiatives, her approach centres on creating practical value for people.
For her, leadership is not simply about building an organisation or achieving personal success. It is about using knowledge, influence and opportunity responsibly. At the heart of that philosophy is a simple question that continues to guide her decisions: “How can I help?”
That question may be simple, but for Pavani, it represents a powerful leadership principle, one that places purpose alongside performance and people alongside profit.
