In the complex and constantly evolving world of global shipping and logistics, leadership requires far more than operational expertise. It demands foresight, courage, and the ability to inspire people while navigating uncertainty. For Mevan Peiris, Group Managing Director of Global Marine Group Sri Lanka, leadership is driven by bold decision-making, strong relationships, and an unwavering ambition to create lasting impact within the maritime industry.
Over the course of nearly two decades in the corporate world, Mevan has built a reputation for strategic thinking and resilience. His leadership journey is not defined by a single turning point but rather by an accumulation of defining moments that gradually shaped his outlook and approach to business. Each challenge, negotiation, and crisis has contributed to the leadership philosophy he embodies today. According to Mevan, adversity is often the greatest teacher. Difficult situations and complex business environments are opportunities to learn, refine strategy, and build stronger organizations. At the center of this philosophy lies one critical leadership skill: communication.
“An effective leader must be a communicator who can galvanize teams into action and ensure everyone clearly understands the vision and direction of the organization,” he says.
Mevan often draws inspiration from his background as a competitive oarsman when explaining leadership dynamics. In rowing, success is not about the strength of one individual but about synchronization and unity of effort. Every member of the team must row with the same rhythm, energy, and commitment to move the boat forward efficiently. He believes the same principle applies to business leadership. Within Global Marine Group, he leads a diverse team of professionals spanning multiple generations and backgrounds, from seasoned industry veterans to young professionals beginning their careers. Recognizing that different individuals respond to different communication styles, he continually adapts his approach to ensure his message resonates with everyone.

While communication styles may evolve, the underlying message remains constant. The organization’s values and principles are firmly rooted, providing a stable foundation for decision-making and strategic direction. “Our principles stay steadfast. The message is always the same; only the packaging changes,” Mevan explains.
This clarity of purpose extends beyond the company itself. Global Marine Group’s broader mission is to contribute meaningfully to international trade while uplifting lives through economic activity. Every strategic decision, partnership, and operational initiative is guided by that central objective. Mevan is driven by what he describes as an insatiable desire to create and achieve more. For him, success is never a final destination but rather a stepping stone toward larger ambitions. “I have never been satisfied with simply being good. I am always looking at bigger and better goals for the organization,” he says.
Perhaps the most pivotal moment in his career came when he made the bold decision to leave a successful corporate role and establish his own group of companies. At the time, he was already a top performer within his previous organization, supported by management and widely respected within the industry. Yet despite the recognition and stability, he felt constrained by the limitations of the role. “I felt like a roaring lion in a cage,” he recalls. “If I wanted to truly test my potential, I had to step out into the unknown.”
The timing of this decision was far from ideal. His wife was expecting their first child, and Sri Lanka was still recovering from a major economic crisis. By most conventional measures, it was a risky and illogical move. However, Mevan trusted his instincts. Guided by a gut feeling that had consistently served him well throughout his career, he chose to leave behind security and build something entirely new.
That decision led to the creation of Global Marine Group.
Today, the organization has grown into a significant player within Sri Lanka’s maritime sector. Through the shipping lines it represents, the Group handles approximately eight percent of the country’s total container throughput. Despite these achievements, Mevan remains focused on the future rather than dwelling on past success. He continues to view every milestone as a stepping stone toward greater ambitions, always searching for the next opportunity to expand and innovate.

While many leaders focus on scaling businesses rapidly, Mevan approaches growth through a different lens. For him, the foundation of sustainable success lies in relationships rather than transactions. “I build relationships, not businesses,” he explains.
This philosophy has shaped Global Marine Group’s approach to partnerships and stakeholder engagement. Whether working with customers, employees, service providers, or global partners, Mevan emphasizes trust, respect, patience, and sincerity as the pillars of every professional relationship.
Over time, this approach has helped the company develop strong alliances with some of the world’s leading shipping organizations. These partnerships span multiple regions and connect Sri Lanka to an extensive global maritime network.
Mevan places great importance on selecting partners who share similar values and long-term perspectives. Before entering any collaboration, the organization carefully evaluates whether the partnership aligns with its broader strategic goals.
The same level of scrutiny applies when building internal teams. Recruiting professionals who share the organization’s vision ensures that the corporate culture remains collaborative and aligned.
Once partnerships are established, Global Marine Group makes every effort to nurture and protect them.
“We treat every partnership almost like a sacred bond,” Mevan says. “We go to great lengths to protect the interests of our partners.” This relationship-driven strategy has produced impressive results. Over the past three years, the organization has achieved an average revenue growth rate of 33 percent year-on-year, demonstrating the strength and stability of its collaborative ecosystem.
Leadership, however, is most clearly tested during times of crisis. The global COVID-19 pandemic presented one of the most challenging periods the shipping industry had ever experienced. During this time, Mevan relied on a principle that continues to guide his strategic thinking: diversify to survive.
Rather than focusing on a single service area, he was part of a business already diversified across several maritime and logistics segments. He was able to capitalize on this breadth, ensuring the organization remained resilient even when certain operations slowed or halted entirely.
The pandemic also created an unexpected opportunity for Sri Lanka to play a crucial humanitarian and logistical role within the global shipping community. Thousands of seafarers around the world were stranded on vessels after completing their contracts, unable to return home due to international travel restrictions. Recognizing both the urgency of the situation and the opportunity to help, Mevan collaborated with key decision-makers across multiple industries to develop an innovative solution. The proposal involved transforming Sri Lanka into a crew change hub during the peak of the pandemic. The plan required coordination across several sectors, including aviation, hospitality, logistics, and government authorities.

Flights were chartered through SriLankan Airlines, hotels were converted into quarantine facilities, and ports such as Hambantota and Galle were utilized alongside Mattala Airport to safely facilitate crew transfers. The initiative proved to be a major success. In addition to helping thousands of seafarers return home safely, the project generated over one hundred million dollars in foreign exchange for Sri Lanka during a time when many industries were facing severe financial strain.
Hotels, airlines, and transport providers all benefited from the new revenue streams created by the initiative. Reflecting on this experience, Mevan believes that innovation often emerges from challenging circumstances. “When faced with a crisis, leaders must look for opportunities hidden within the challenge,” he explains. The experience reinforced Global Marine Group’s commitment to identifying niche markets and developing creative solutions that benefit both the organization and the wider economy.
Operating within the shipping industry also requires constant awareness of global developments. Trade routes, geopolitical shifts, and economic trends can influence maritime operations dramatically. To remain ahead of these changes, Global Marine Group maintains a dedicated team responsible for monitoring global developments and analyzing their potential impact on the business. Another important element of the company’s strategy is international expansion. Recognizing the importance of proximity to major shipping hubs, the Group has established overseas offices in Singapore and Dubai, two of the world’s most influential maritime centers. These offices allow the organization to strengthen relationships with international partners while creating new business opportunities that complement its Sri Lankan operations.
Plans are already underway to expand further, with two additional international offices scheduled to open in emerging markets within the region. These expansions will allow the company to strengthen its global footprint while supporting the growth of Sri Lanka’s maritime industry.“My mission is to make the Global Marine Group brand a global icon of brilliance and superiority,” Mevan says. Alongside business growth, Mevan remains deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of maritime professionals in Sri Lanka. He believes that the country possesses tremendous potential within global trade networks, but unlocking that potential requires investment in human capital.
Early in his career, he established the Young Shipping Professionals of CASA, an industry initiative designed to connect young professionals within the maritime sector. The organization, which later evolved into YoungShip, created a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and professional development. By modernizing engagement within the shipping community, the initiative helped inspire more young people to pursue careers within the industry. Mevan has carried this philosophy into his leadership at Global Marine Group. The organization actively invests in training and development programs while collaborating with educational institutions to introduce students to opportunities within the maritime sector.

These partnerships help bridge the gap between education and industry while creating pathways for aspiring professionals to enter the field. Looking toward the future, Mevan acknowledges that technology will significantly reshape the global shipping landscape. Automation, artificial intelligence, and digital logistics platforms are gradually transforming how maritime operations are conducted.
Although the shipping industry has historically been slower to adopt technological innovations compared to other sectors, that trend is rapidly changing. Automated terminals, autonomous vessels, and digital booking platforms are becoming increasingly common. Despite these advancements, Mevan believes human expertise will remain essential. “There will always be a need for skilled professionals who can manage and support these technologies,” he says.
To prepare for these changes, Global Marine Group is working closely with international partners to develop training programs that equip Sri Lankan professionals with specialized skills suited to the evolving maritime landscape. At the same time, the company is adjusting its long-term strategy to reflect emerging trends within commercial shipping. Digital booking systems and integrated logistics platforms are expected to gradually transform traditional brokerage and freight forwarding models.
Recognizing this shift, Global Marine Group has incorporated these developments into its five-year strategic plan, ensuring that investment decisions and resource allocation align with the future direction of the industry. Through strategic vision, bold entrepreneurship, and a commitment to building meaningful partnerships, Mevan continues to guide Global Marine Group toward new horizons.
His journey reflects the power of ambition combined with resilience. By constantly seeking new opportunities and encouraging innovation within his organization, he is not only shaping the future of his company but also contributing to Sri Lanka’s growing presence within global maritime trade.
For Mevan Peiris, the journey is far from complete. Driven by a relentless desire to achieve more, he remains focused on the next challenge and the next opportunity to expand. As global trade continues to evolve, his leadership philosophy remains clear: progress belongs to those willing to move beyond comfort zones, embrace uncertainty, and pursue their vision with unwavering determination.
