Leading with Purpose: Driving Legacy, Innovation, and the Future of Sri Lanka’s Dairy Industry

In an era defined by rapid change and rising consumer expectations, leadership requires more than strategic foresight, it demands vision, resilience, and the courage to innovate. Sasanka Perera, Group Chief Executive Officer of Lanka Milk Foods Group, Lecturer at Oxford College of Business Sri Lanka, UNISTEM and CIPM, exemplifies this blend of leadership acumen and forward-thinking insight. Across boardrooms and classrooms, Sasanka’s approach emphasizes purpose-driven decision-making, legacy building, and consumer-focused innovation.

Leadership, Sasanka asserts, is intrinsically tied to ambiguity. “As a leader, uncertainty is a part and parcel of the journey. What matters is having a clear vision, integrity, and a goal you are committed to,” he explains. Challenges will emerge from every direction, yet persistence and clarity of purpose allow leaders to move forward with confidence. This philosophy has guided him throughout his tenure at Lanka Milk Foods Group, where he navigates the complexities of the dairy sector while balancing operational demands with long-term strategic objectives. By anchoring decisions in purpose, uncertainty becomes a catalyst for innovative problem-solving rather than a barrier.

While many leaders focus on immediate results, Sasanka prioritizes legacy and vision. He is keenly aware that the company he leads stands on the shoulders of giants, particularly Late Mr. Deshamanya Harry Jayawardena, who introduced fresh milk and powdered milk to Sri Lanka decades ago. “The legacy of Late Mr. Deshamanya Harry Jayawardena is what I am taking forward together with our current chairman Mr. Royle Jansz and the board of directors. As CEO, it is my responsibility to build upon the foundation he has established, ensuring that the vision and values he instilled continue to guide the company,” Sasanka says. Every decision and strategy reflects a balance of honoring past achievements while preparing the organization for future growth. This focus on legacy extends beyond products and profits; it encompasses employee development, ethical practices, and fostering a culture that values innovation and collaboration.

Sasanka’s influence extends beyond corporate leadership into education, where he challenges conventional thinking and encourages innovation among students. “In today’s context, you need out-of-the-box thinking. You cannot stick to normal plans because the world, products, and systems are changing rapidly,” he observes. This mindset informs his approach to talent development at Lanka Milk Foods Group. When hiring, he prioritizes individuals who challenge the status quo, bringing fresh perspectives and creative solutions to the table. By fostering this culture of innovation, he ensures both his team and the broader industry remain agile and competitive. He also believes that education and mentoring are essential to preparing future leaders who can navigate complexity while staying grounded in values and purpose.

Asked to imagine redesigning the country’s dairy industry from the ground up, Sasanka identifies strategic differentiation as key. “Sri Lanka has excellent locations for dairy development. I would clearly differentiate between large-scale and small-scale farmers,” he explains. For larger operators, he would provide long-term opportunity, land access, and resources to scale production, similar to the model Lanka Milk Foods adopted nearly two decades ago with the Ambewela Farm. “This approach allowed us to build the largest dairy operation in Sri Lanka, producing high-quality milk that remains unmatched.” For smaller farmers, he advocates tailored support addressing funding, infrastructure, and capacity-building separately. This nuanced approach reflects his broader philosophy: sustainable growth requires both strategic vision and attention to individual stakeholder needs. Sasanka emphasizes that nurturing both large and small-scale players strengthens the ecosystem, encourages innovation, and secures long-term resilience for the industry as a whole.

In an increasingly health-conscious and sustainability-driven market, Sasanka stresses that consumer focus is critical to future-ready brands. Consumer preferences evolve rapidly, and what was valued ten years ago may no longer suffice today. For Lanka Milk Foods Group, this means remaining highly adaptive, attentive to changing tastes, and responsive to emerging trends. Sasanka emphasizes that being consumer-ready is synonymous with being future-ready. Sustainability complements this focus. As a publicly listed company, Lanka Milk Foods prioritizes environmentally responsible practices in production, packaging, and operations. By embedding sustainability into the company’s DNA, Sasanka ensures the group continues to thrive in a competitive global marketplace while maintaining its commitment to social and environmental stewardship. He believes that balancing profitability with responsibility is the hallmark of a modern, credible brand, and it reinforces consumer trust over the long term.

Through his leadership, Sasanka demonstrates how vision, integrity, and strategic foresight can transform challenges into opportunities. His approach balances honoring a rich legacy with fostering innovation, nurturing talent, and meeting evolving consumer expectations. Whether in boardrooms or classrooms, Sasanka champions a leadership style that is resilient, future-ready, and deeply rooted in purpose. His work at Lanka Milk Foods Group not only shapes the trajectory of Sri Lanka’s dairy industry but also offers a blueprint for sustainable growth, innovation, and legacy-driven leadership in any sector. By embracing change, empowering teams, and maintaining a consumer-first approach, he ensures that the company will continue to lead the industry for generations to come.
