Early lessons in leadership were shaped on the rugby field, where he captained the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Team. Rugby instilled in him resilience, adaptability, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. “Indecision is often more damaging than a wrong decision,” he notes. “Once you make a call, you rally your team, adjust if necessary, and keep moving forward.” This mindset translates seamlessly into corporate leadership, where rapid shifts in markets, regulations, and operational conditions are commonplace.

Eventually, he advanced to leadership roles overseeing bulk operations at LAUGFS Gas and leading major business units before assuming his current role at McLarens Lubricants.

At LAUGFS Engineering (2023–2024), Rajitha led one of the most notable corporate turnarounds in Sri Lanka’s downstream energy sector. Under his leadership, revenue increased by 185% within one year, operational efficiency improved and net losses were reduced by strengthening the company’s financial foundation. His disciplined P&L oversight improved cash flow, while securing CIDA EM certification enhanced the firm’s credibility and compliance standards. These achievements reflected a rare combination of technical rigor and commercial foresight, allowing LAUGFS Engineering to compete for larger EPC contracts and complex energy projects.

Rajitha has also demonstrated extensive technical authority across national-level petroleum engineering projects, including initiatives for Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and Lanka IOC, ensuring strict adherence to API, ASME, NFPA and SLS standards. He oversaw EPC projects at all stages, from technical evaluation and pre-contract planning to fabrication, installation, commissioning, and performance assurance. His technical expertise extended to industrial infrastructure. Safety and risk management are central to his philosophy, exemplified through HAZOP studies, audits, and rigorous regulatory compliance.

Commercially, Rajitha played a pivotal role in strengthening LAUGFS’s position in Sri Lanka’s LPG market by driving growth through the bulk segment At a time when the company held a small share of the overall marke, he led the strategic expansion of bulk LPG operations, successfully doubling the company’s bulk LPG volumes. By 2018, this momentum translated into a commanding 70% share of the national bulk LPG segment. Central to this success was his leadership in developing multiple bulk LPG installations and executing large-scale fuel conversion initiatives. from furnace oil and diesel to LPG. These initiatives delivered tangible outcomes, lower operating costs, reduced CO₂ emissions, and enhanced dual-fuel capability, 37.5 kg commercial cylinder market and securing long-term supply agreements with leading Apartments hotel groups, restaurant chains. He also played a key role in landmark industrial and commercial projects, including the Port City SNG distribution system demonstrating the convergence of engineering expertise, sustainability, and commercial strategy.

Rajitha’s influence extends beyond national borders. He led the LAUGFS VAT/VET project expansion in Kenya, ensuring compliance with international engineering, safety, and regulatory requirements. He also provided technical insights for regional Asian infrastructure and energy projects, supporting market entry strategies and feasibility studies. This international exposure reinforced his ability to navigate diverse regulatory and operational contexts while maintaining rigorous engineering standards.

Digitization is another pillar of his strategic vision. Upgrading Sapugaskanda refinery will not only save foreign exchange but also meet next-generation fuel and emissions standards. Expanding LNG infrastructure and marine bunkering capabilities positions Sri Lanka as a regional petroleum hub, while sustainable industrial fuel conversions contribute to lowering the national carbon footprint.
