Breaking Barriers in Logistics: Leadership, Vision, and Inclusion

In an industry often perceived as complex, operationally demanding, and historically male-led, Tania Polonnowita Wettimuny has established herself as a leader who blends strategic clarity with inclusive leadership. As the Group Managing Director at IAS Holdings Pvt Ltd, she brings over three decades of experience spanning global trade, logistics operations, and business leadership across regional and international markets. Her journey exemplifies professional excellence while reflecting the evolving nature of leadership in logistics and supply chain management.

A defining milestone came when Tania became the first woman in the subcontinent to chair the Sri Lanka Logistics & Freight Forwarders Association, shattering a long-standing glass ceiling in the sector. For her, this achievement went beyond personal recognition, it signaled progress for the logistics industry and reinforced her commitment to fostering a more inclusive professional environment.

“Being the first woman to chair the Sri Lanka Logistics & Freight Forwarders Association was both a proud and humbling milestone,” she says. “It represents not only a personal achievement but also progress for the logistics and freight forwarding industry in our region.”

This breakthrough has profoundly shaped Tania’s understanding of effective leadership. For her, true leadership is defined not by gender, titles, or hierarchy but by capability, resilience, and vision in the face of complexity. “Breaking this glass ceiling reinforced my belief that leadership is defined by capability, resilience, and vision rather than gender,” she explains.

Tania’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of logistics professionals stems from this belief. Representation, she notes, can be a powerful catalyst for change. “When people see possibilities, they are more confident to pursue them,” she observes. “I hope my journey encourages future leaders to step forward with confidence, knowing that leadership opportunities are open to anyone with dedication and integrity.”

Her leadership philosophy centers on accessibility and transparency. Within the organizations she leads, Tania maintains an open-door approach, empowering teams to raise concerns early and address challenges proactively. In an industry spanning multiple geographies with intricate supply chains, this responsiveness has proven essential.

“Maintaining an open-door policy allows teams to raise concerns early, so challenges can be addressed immediately,” she notes. “Resolving issues promptly keeps operations stable and ensures stakeholders remain confident.” Experience has also taught her the importance of balancing decisiveness with empathy. As organizations grow and teams become more diverse, leaders must understand people’s perspectives while staying focused on strategic objectives.

“I’ve learned to lead with empathy without compromising the organization’s purpose and goals,” Tania adds. This balance has been invaluable in steering a diversified logistics group through the complexities of modern trade environments, which are influenced by geopolitical shifts, technological advancements, regulatory changes, and evolving customer expectations.

Resilience, in Tania’s view, is built on strong governance, transparency, and empowered teams. By fostering a culture that prioritizes accountability and collaboration, organizations can remain adaptable even in unpredictable environments. Empowering people is central to her leadership model. Sustainable growth, she believes, is only possible when organizations invest in developing future leaders capable of navigating emerging challenges and opportunities.

Her commitment to inclusivity is particularly evident in encouraging greater participation of women in logistics and supply chain careers. Despite gradual progress, the industry still carries perceptions of being traditionally male-led, something Tania has actively worked to challenge.

“Through the years, I’ve worked to create an environment where women see logistics and forwarding as an industry where they can thrive, grow, and reach the next level,” she says. Her advocacy extends beyond internal initiatives, encompassing participation in industry forums, interviews, and professional discussions to amplify the visibility of women leaders.

“I actively participate in forums and conversations because I want my story and voice to be heard,” she explains. “It’s important for young girls and women to see logistics as a career they can confidently pursue and succeed in.”

While mentorship and inclusivity are central to her work, Tania also keeps a keen eye on the sector’s future. Logistics and freight forwarding are undergoing rapid transformation, driven by technological innovation, sustainability pressures, and evolving global trade patterns. For organizations willing to embrace change, these shifts offer significant opportunities.

Digital transformation, she believes, will be one of the most powerful drivers of industry growth. Automation, integrated logistics platforms, and real-time data analytics are reshaping supply chains. “Digital transformation and automation offer enormous potential to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and provide real-time data for smarter decision-making,” she notes.

Sustainability is another area ripe for meaningful innovation. As businesses place greater emphasis on environmental responsibility, logistics companies are exploring greener transport methods, energy-efficient operations, and sustainable supply chain solutions. “These changes are not just about compliance,” Tania explains. “They create opportunities for innovation and new value creation for customers.”

Global trade shifts continue to influence logistics strategies. Supply chain diversification, regional trade partnerships, and evolving consumer demands require companies to remain agile and forward-thinking. Drawing on her experience in regional operations and international joint ventures, Tania offers practical guidance for businesses expanding in complex trade environments.

“In logistics, you have to think globally but act locally,” she observes. “Strategic planning must go hand in hand with strong operations.” Investing in local talent and building trusted partnerships are critical when entering new markets, and technology plays a pivotal role in bridging differences while enhancing operational visibility. Equally vital is cultivating an organizational culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.

“Fostering a culture of accountability and continuous learning is what keeps a business resilient and performing well, even in challenging times,” Tania notes.

Reflecting on her three decades in business, Tania’s impact extends far beyond operational leadership. Through mentorship, inclusive practices, and advocacy, she has helped shape a progressive vision for logistics in the region. Her story illustrates that leadership is not only about navigating complexity but also about opening doors for others to step forward. As the logistics and freight forwarding industry continues to evolve, leaders like Tania ensure that its future is not only innovative and resilient but also inclusive.
