Beyond Numbers: How Finance Leadership Drives Strategy, Sustainability, and Growth in Modern Enterprises
In today’s volatile and interconnected business environment, finance leadership has evolved far beyond traditional responsibilities of reporting, controls, and compliance. It now plays a central role in shaping strategy, enabling transformation, embedding sustainability, and driving long-term value creation. This shift is clearly reflected in the professional journey and leadership philosophy of Dhanushka Warnakulasooriya, Deputy General Manager – Finance at Brandix Apparel (Pvt) Ltd, whose career spans over 16 years across a leading global accounting firm and a large diversified conglomerate.
Dhanushka’s leadership style has been shaped by two contrasting yet equally influential professional environments. His early career at KPMG Sri Lanka laid a strong foundation in discipline, governance, and analytical rigor. Working in a leading audit firm required precision, accountability, and adherence to the highest ethical standards. Leadership in this context was about leading through facts, structured thinking, and calm, objective decision-making under pressure. Reflecting on this phase, he describes himself as an “unpolished stone,” shaped through opportunity, pressure, experience, and perseverance into a refined professional with strong judgment and resilience.
A defining transition occurred with his move to LOLC Holdings PLC, where he was exposed to a markedly different leadership environment. Operating within a large, diversified conglomerate led by highly entrepreneurial leadership demanded speed, adaptability, and a willingness to make bold decisions in complex and evolving markets. Leadership here extended beyond governance into opportunity identification, calculated risk-taking, and aligning decisions with long-term strategic vision rather than short-term comfort. This experience expanded his perspective on empowering teams, embracing agility, and driving execution in dynamic business settings.
Today, as Deputy General Manager – Finance at Brandix Apparel (Pvt) Ltd, Dhanushka’s leadership style represents a deliberate balance of these two worlds. He combines strong governance with entrepreneurial agility, ensuring integrity while enabling innovation. The core principles guiding his decisions include integrity, clarity of purpose, people development, and sustainable value creation. As he notes, “Effective leadership is not about control, but about trust, setting clear direction, enabling capable teams, and holding myself accountable for outcomes.” His role, as he sees it, is to translate vision into execution while nurturing a culture that is ethical, resilient, and growth-oriented.
Having worked in organizations managing large numbers of group companies, Dhanushka brings a disciplined yet adaptable approach to ensuring alignment, accountability, and high performance across diverse teams. Alignment, in his view, begins with transparency and consistency. He strongly advocates standardized group-wide reporting frameworks that create a single version of the truth across all entities. Through the implementation of structured and uniform reporting formats, he has enhanced visibility into financial and operational performance, enabled meaningful comparisons across businesses, and supported faster, more informed decision-making at group level. This common financial language helps align leadership teams with strategic priorities while still respecting local operational realities.
Accountability is driven by clearly linking outcomes to well-defined KPIs. Each business unit understands how its performance contributes to broader group objectives, reinforcing ownership and responsibility. Performance reviews are positioned not merely as evaluative processes, but as developmental engagements supported by continuous feedback, coaching, and targeted guidance. High performance is further sustained through clarity of expectations, disciplined execution, and an ongoing focus on process improvement. By simplifying workflows and eliminating non-value-adding activities, teams are able to direct their efforts toward strategic initiatives and consistent delivery, even in complex financial and operational environments. As Dhanushka explains, “I focus on building strong fundamentals rather than relying on short-term fixes. When the foundation is right, it creates long-term efficiency, scalability, and stability across the entire ecosystem.”
Developing high-potential talent is another cornerstone of his leadership philosophy. In an environment increasingly shaped by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, Dhanushka views talent development as a core leadership responsibility. He begins by ensuring his teams clearly understand where the organization is headed and how the finance function plays a strategic role in shaping business outcomes. This clarity of purpose fosters engagement, ownership, and future-focused thinking.
He places strong emphasis on educating teams across the full value chain, encouraging them to understand not only how reports are prepared, but how accurate and timely inputs translate into reliable insights for strategic decision-making. This end-to-end perspective strengthens commercial acumen and enables finance professionals to contribute meaningfully at leadership level. Recognition plays an equally important role, with visible credit given for good work to build confidence and accountability, complemented by continuous guidance and constructive feedback to support growth.
To prepare high-potential talent for strategic leadership roles, Dhanushka actively creates opportunities for exposure to diverse internal and external stakeholders. This engagement helps emerging leaders understand market dynamics, evolving industry trends, and the realities of operating in a VUCA environment. Through mentoring, trust, and real-world experience, individuals develop both the mindset and capability required to become future finance leaders. “As a leader, it’s deeply rewarding to see team members develop the confidence and capability to eventually step into my role,” he reflects.
From his perspective at Brandix, the role of finance leadership within the apparel and manufacturing industry has undergone a profound transformation. What was once a function focused primarily on cost control and reporting has evolved into a strategic partner shaping long-term business direction, driving operational excellence, and embedding sustainability. Today, sustainability is not only an ethical imperative but a financial one. Finance leaders are increasingly responsible for integrating ESG considerations into investment appraisals, supply chain decisions, and carbon reduction initiatives, translating environmental and social impact into measurable financial outcomes.
Brandix’s deep commitment to nurturing our planet, demonstrated through pioneering initiatives such as building the world’s first Net-Zero Carbon apparel manufacturing facility and early adoption of science-based carbon reduction targets, has positioned finance as a key enabler of sustainable transformation. Cost competitiveness has also taken on a new dimension. Traditional cost-cutting approaches are no longer sufficient amid global volatility, fluctuating commodity prices, and rising compliance demands. Finance leadership must now drive structural cost transformation through digitalization, lean efficiencies, and data-driven insights, working closely with manufacturing, sourcing, and planning teams to protect margins and sustain operational excellence.
Value creation has similarly broadened beyond short-term financial performance. Modern finance leaders must balance immediate results with long-term strategic investments in innovation, automation, talent, and sustainability. At Brandix, finance plays an increasingly strategic role in shaping commercial models, evaluating growth opportunities, and enabling innovation across both processes and sustainability initiatives.
Looking ahead, Dhanushka believes Sri Lanka’s corporate sector will be shaped by stronger regulatory oversight, heightened investor scrutiny, and rising expectations around transparency and governance. Digital transformation and AI-driven analytics will fundamentally reshape decision-making, enabling predictive forecasting, scenario modeling, and real-time operational visibility. At the same time, cybersecurity will become a non-negotiable priority as digital ecosystems expand. Sustainability and ESG integration will shift from being a differentiator to a core license to operate, particularly for companies embedded in global value chains.
To remain resilient and competitive, organizations must adopt future-focused operating models that balance financial discipline with bold investments in digital capability, sustainability, and people. Those that move early, he believes, will not simply adapt to change but will define the next phase of Sri Lanka’s corporate evolution.
