Beyond Boundaries: Leadership Across Hospitality, Travel, and Education

In a business landscape marked by rapid disruption, cultural diversity, and rising expectations of ethical leadership, the role of a leader has expanded far beyond operational expertise. Today’s leaders are expected to balance performance with purpose, adaptability with authenticity, and growth with social responsibility. Daniela Jelincic Munasinghe, Director and Dean of Tourism & Education at Baurs Airservices, Swiss Hotel Management Academy (SHMA), and Baurs Travels, exemplifies this balance through a career that spans industry and academia, local markets and global contexts. Her leadership journey reflects how values-driven decision-making, resilience, and a commitment to developing people can create sustainable impact across Sri Lanka’s hospitality, travel, and education sectors.

Adapting her leadership style across different sectors has required both flexibility and self-awareness. Hospitality and travel demand swift decision-making and operational agility, while academia calls for mentorship, patience, and open dialogue. Despite these differences, Daniela remains anchored in empathy, collaboration, transparency, and integrity. “My approach to leadership is anything but fixed; it’s a living, breathing journey that’s constantly shaped by the people I work with,” she reflects. These values align closely with the ethos of A. Baur & Co. (Pvt.) Ltd (Baurs), a 129-year-old institution in Sri Lanka’s corporate landscape, whose commitment to ethical business and forward-thinking leadership continues to inspire her own professional journey.

Being part of Baurs is more than a role, it is a source of pride that reinforces Daniela’s belief in purpose-driven leadership. She credits the encouragement and mentorship of Baurs’ CEO and Managing Director, Mr. Rolf Blaser, for helping her strengthen her leadership voice and confidence. His support has enabled her to grow not only as a senior leader, but also as a mentor who is deeply committed to empowering others within the organization. Daniela views leadership as a shared journey, shaped by trust, guidance, and collective growth rather than hierarchy.

Her leadership philosophy has also been shaped by a deeply multicultural life. Born Croatian, raised in Canada, educated in Switzerland, and having lived and worked in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, Daniela’s global exposure has heightened her cultural sensitivity and adaptability. Leading in unfamiliar environments tested her confidence and reinforced the importance of listening, trust-building, and respect. These qualities became especially critical during periods of crisis, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the post-pandemic recovery, and ongoing economic uncertainty.

These challenges demanded resilience, innovation, and constant recalibration. Rather than retreat, Daniela and her teams sought collaboration and opportunity in adversity. “It was during these moments of challenge that we discovered new partnerships and synergies within the industry,” she notes. A notable outcome was the collaboration with Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts to deliver vocational hospitality programs designed by École Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), world’s leading hospitality university. This initiative demonstrated how industry partnerships can emerge from uncertainty to create long-term value, strengthening both talent development and sector resilience.

Alongside her industry leadership, Daniela plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of professionals as Dean and Lecturer at SHMA. Her approach to education is holistic, focusing not only on technical competence but also on leadership mindset, resilience, and global readiness. She believes that future leaders in hospitality and service-driven industries must be confident, culturally aware, and prepared to navigate rapid change. Through mentorship programs, real-world exposure, and leadership opportunities, students are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zones and develop the resilience required for long-term success.

One of SHMA’s most significant achievements in the last 3 years has been training over 2000 students, with women making up 40% of participants. This strong level of female inclusion positions SHMA as one of the region’s leading hospitality academies for gender representation.  This commitment is further strengthened through collaboration with the Swiss Government’s Skills for Sustainable Growth (SSG) project, which aims to skill 2,240 youths by 2026 through 10 learning centers across Sri Lanka. The initiative blends technical training with essential soft skills, ensuring graduates are prepared for global service standards while remaining grounded in empathy and professionalism.

Looking ahead, Daniela sees Sri Lanka’s hospitality, travel, and air services sectors undergoing profound transformation. Customer expectations are shifting toward personalized, digitally enabled experiences that balance efficiency with authentic human connection. At the same time, sustainability has become a central consideration, with travelers increasingly seeking brands that demonstrate genuine environmental and social responsibility. In response, Baurs Travels is prioritizing personalization, customization, and digitalization to create memorable and meaningful guest experiences tailored to individual preferences.

In air services, Baurs continues to strengthen Sri Lanka’s global connectivity. The company offers the country’s only direct European connections through Edelweiss Air, a sister company of Swiss International Air Lines, while Swiss WorldCargo enhances logistics capabilities and supports international trade. Daniela also highlights the growing importance of cultural awareness and inclusion as global mobility reshapes the industry, underscoring the need for education systems that keep pace with industry evolution.

Despite strong academic foundations, Daniela observes that many graduates still lack critical soft skills such as communication, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and confidence. At SHMA, this gap is addressed through a work-learn-earn model that integrates classroom learning with hands-on industry exposure from the outset. Students are guaranteed on-the-job experience with over 100 hotel partners island-wide, including Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts, enabling them to apply theory in real-world settings while building professional confidence.

For Daniela, the essence of leadership lies in staying true to one’s core values while remaining open to change. “The heart of successful leadership lies in holding fast to your core values,” she says. By doing so, she continues to influence industries, empower young women, and shape future leaders, demonstrating that leadership rooted in purpose, inclusion, and resilience is not only transformative, but essential for sustainable business success.
